At some point in our lives we will be challenged to seek an answer that doesn’t exist “out there” – we must go within and listen to our intuition. We cannot live life through a formula – what works for someone else may not work for us. “Do this, do that, and you will be happy, this is what made me happy, you will be rich and successful if …” . The only way to find true happiness and success is by following your heart and your truth. And it’s not always easy when we are living in a world that is constantly bombarding us with messages that can instill fear. School doesn’t encourage children to think for themselves. We’re all born intuitive but it gets knocked out of us early on. Adults tell their children “You shouldn’t feel that way” or “go and play with such-and-such” and “Don’t be rude to Uncle Stan. He’d like you to sit on his lap.”So how do we access our intuition? And how do we expand our intuition? To find the answer, we must look at how we lost our intuition in the first place.
Little children are in touch with their intuition.
“Except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.”
Little children don’t overthink things. They’re in touch with their feelings and instincts. The thinking mind hasn’t taken over yet and poisoned them with intellectualism. They’re innocent and trusting. Throughout our lives, we have learned to fear. By the Kingdom of Heaven, Jesus isn’t referring to Heaven after we die; he’s talking about the Kingdom of Heaven that is available to us here on Earth now. So he’s saying “Stay true to your feelings, stay innocent and trusting of your inner guidance and you will create your own heaven.”
The only thing that stops us from listening to our own truth and following our own truth is fear. And that fear comes from our wounding, our conditioning and the limiting beliefs we have been taught, that disconnect us from our Divine Source. We can only follow and trust our intuition as much as we have grown and understood Truth. Many of us intrinsically don’t believe that it’s safe to trust our gut instinct, because we learned not to trust in the process of life. Many of us haven’t had enough opportunities to follow our truth and to see the miracles that can happen when we do.
In truth there is nothing to fear by following your own truth and everything to gain. The Supreme Intelligence does not want us to suffer, to feel anxious or fearful. The Supreme Intelligence loves us and wants us to feel safe and provided for. That is why it sends us messages – it’s constantly trying to speak to us, but we’re too busy, disconnected and ungrounded to receive these messages. The French philosopher and mathematician Blaise Pascal told us:
‘All man’s miseries derive from not being able to sit quietly in a room alone.”
And the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras said:
“Learn to be silent. Let your quiet mind listen and absorb.”
These were two brilliant men – I trust their advice! We will never become intuitive with a busy mind. Intuition is a feeling thing; not a thinking thing. If we meditate regularly, it is inevitable that the third eye, the chakra of intuition, will open and reveal truth to us. This may be frightening at first because we may get messages that we don’t want or that may not even make any sense, such as:
“This relationship is not for you. Get out!”
“You cannot stay in this job.”
“Do this” or “do that”.
The Divine Source is love and it will guide us to our highest good if we follow our feelings and trust.
If you want to expand your intuition, focus on the third eye chakra at the centre of your forehead and say:
“I am willing to see; I am willing to know.”
Every answer that you need already exists within you. When Michelangelo was asked how he went about sculpting the statue of David he said “The statue already exists in the marble.” The most divine, happy, successful version of you already exists within you too. There is nothing you need to “do” or to “add” to you. In fact it’s the opposite. You simply need to sit with yourself and be still and you will begin to let go of the illusions that trap you and keep you stuck and in fear. True transformation is a series of “letting go”, “peeling the onion” layer by layer until we arrive at our truth, our True Self. When we begin to wake up, we will start seeing truth and we get realisations about the lies we live by. We begin to question. Buddha tells us:
Do not believe what you have heard.
Do not believe in tradition because it is handed down many generations.
Do not believe in anything that has been spoken of many times.
Do not believe because the written statements come from some old sage.
Do not believe in conjecture.
Do not believe in authority or teachers or elders.
Do not believe what I say.
But after careful observation and analysis, when it agrees with reason and it will benefit one and all, then accept it and live by it.
There are many so-called “truths” that we take on because we’ve been conditioned to believe them. When we let go of the illusions, we set ourselves free. And miracles are just that: a change of perception and therefore a change of reality.
When we first choose to use our intuition, however, we may not see miracles straight away; we may see chaos, and unsettling situations that bring up all our fears. It will seem scary. This is the Universe re-arranging all the choices of the past that didn’t serve us, that have to be re-arranged if we are to step onto our true path. And this is true for anybody when they make the courageous decision to follow their intuition.
Knowing that we are connected to a Divine Matrix of energy that wants to support us and help us is the key. This is why we meditate – to connect with the Divine Intelligence and allow it to channel through us.
“When we ask for guidance and lay aside the reasoning mind we are tapping the Universal supply of all knowledge. Anything necessary for you to know will be revealed to you.” – Florence Scovel-Shinn.
So if you have a challenge, surrender it to the Universe and ask for all you need to know and Divine guidance. I’ve never known this not to work.
“I surrender to You this situation. Thank You for revealing to me all that I need to know, and all that I need to do.”
And then surrender and trust that it will all come to you in divine and perfect timing. Continue a regular meditation practice, continue daily prayer or to have times of quiet solitude, away from all the noise and confusing messages.
he third eye will open more, the more we allow our messages to come through and to FOLLOW THEM. But if we don’t follow the messages, eventually the third eyes shuts down. This is why people stay in abusive relationships. The signs are always there early on, but the person shuts them out. He or she wants to believe that he/she is the one and they’ll change. Sign after sign (a slap on the arm, a nasty name called) and he/ she ignores it, and, like the boiling frog, this all begins to get normalised until he/she is experiencing full-on emotional abuse, mental abuse and/or physical abuse. When the early abuse started, every cell in the body would have been screaming “Get out! You’re not safe!” But then the reasoning mind comes in: “Yes, but who’s going to pay the bills? And what are people going to think? I don’t want to disrupt the children and leave this house …” And so eventually the third eye shuts down. “What’s the use?” says the Higher Self.
A client told me recently that she ignored a sign from the Universe, so the Universe sent her a stronger sign. She didn’t want to follow that either. “Then it sent me brick,” she said. Occurrences like accidents, health scares and crises are the Universe’s way of making us wake up and see something we don’t want to see. We’re better off following the smaller signs that are presented to us initially than ignoring them until it turns into a brick!
Many of us receive signs and guidance from the outside. If you want to receive more signs, say to Universe:
“I am open to signs and guidance. Thank You for sending me signs and guidance.”
Your signs and guidance will be unique to you. Some people see angel feathers, many of us see sequential numbers, we may hear a song or see a sign or a headline with a meaningful instruction on it.
To sum up, here are the ways to increase your intuitive power:
- Meditate, pray and have times of quiet solitude.
- Declare “I am willing to see. I am willing to know.”
- Declare “I am open to signs and guidance”.
- Declare “Everything I need to know is shown to me”.
- If you are getting guidance and signs but don’t want to follow it, ask yourself “what am I afraid of?” and then “What do I have to believe to be afraid of this?”
- If you’re not sure about the messages you are getting, ask for a further sign.
- After meditation, actively seek a sign, such as taking a guidance card from a deck or opening a spiritual book and see where the page turns. You will be surprised how often you will get the message you needed.
- If you have a problem, take a card from a guidance deck. “Thank you for telling me what I need to know right now about this situation”. Again, you may be surprised how uncanny the answer is.
